Résumé

Partant du mbiwi, danse par excellence des cérémonies de mariage à Mayotte, le film remonte aux rites d'initiation féminine de l'unyago, encore présents dans l'océan Indien, notamment à Zanzibar, puis illustre d'autres danses du même genre. Loin d'être de simples danses de séduction, ces pratiques permettent aux femmes d'affirmer une subjectivité féminine puissante et créative et de construire une socialité solidaire et engagée dans le collectif.  En mettant en scène un ethos social spécifiquement féminin, elles démontrent la maîtrise par les femmes des affaires liées au mariage et, par conséquent, leur capacité à contrôler une part importante de l'économie familiale et de la stratification sociale par le biais des alliances matrimoniales. Ainsi, à travers la danse, les femmes revendiquent une sexualité et une sensualité créatives qui constituent un rempart contre le pouvoir dominant et leur permettent de conserver un espace de liberté, d'action et de décision important.

Abstrait

Starting with the mbiwi, the dance par excellence of wedding ceremonies in Mayotte, the film looks back at the female initiation rites of the unyago, still present in the Indian Ocean, notably in Zanzibar, and then illustrates other dances of the same type. Far from being mere seduction dances, these practices enable women to assert a powerful, creative feminine subjectivity and build a sociality that is supportive of and committed to the collective.  By staging a specifically feminine social ethos, they demonstrate women's mastery of marriage-related affairs and, consequently, their ability to control an important part of the family economy and social stratification through matrimonial alliances. Thus, through dance, women lay claim to a creative sexuality and sensuality that constitute a bulwark against dominant power and enable them to retain a significant space of freedom, action and decision-making.
